If you are self-employed in Portugal, you have probably heard of ATGo. But what exactly is it, and what is it for?
ATGo is a free app from the Autoridade Tributária e Aduaneira (AT), the Portuguese tax authority, designed for taxpayers who work on their own account.
It lets you handle several obligations linked to your activity straight from your phone.
What can you do with ATGo?
With ATGo you can, among other things:
- issue invoices, invoice-receipts and receipts;
- view the documents you have issued;
- track the income from your activity;
- record and view business expenses;
- check tax information relevant to your business.
One of its main advantages is that you invoice through an official tax authority tool, without paying for invoicing software just for simple operations.
Who can use it?
ATGo is mainly aimed at individuals registered for an activity with the Finanças, in particular self-employed workers and service providers — those who issue recibos verdes.
Depending on your activity and needs, ATGo may be enough, or certified invoicing software with more features may suit you better.
Does ATGo replace an accountant?
No.
ATGo is essentially a tool that makes invoicing and tracking some business information easier. It does not replace tax and accounting follow-up.
IVA — Portuguese VAT —, Segurança Social, IRS, transactions with foreign clients, OSS, withholding tax and the correct treatment of expenses all still need careful attention.
How much does it cost?
ATGo is free.
For many self-employed people with a fairly simple activity, it is a practical way to issue invoicing documents and keep track of the business from their phone.
